ChatGPT May Not Be Basic. Your Prompts May Be

Many people try ChatGPT once and conclude that it is basic. They ask for a website, business idea, sales page, or marketing plan and receive an answer that sounds polished but could apply to almost anyone.

The problem may not be ChatGPT. The problem may be the instruction.

If you give AI a vague request, it must fill the missing information with general assumptions. That is why a prompt such as “Build me a professional website” often produces attractive but ordinary content. ChatGPT does not know your audience, offer, business goals, preferred style, or the action visitors should take unless you explain them.

ChatGPT Is Not a Mind Reader

Imagine hiring a web designer and saying only, “Make something nice.” The designer would immediately need more information. What does the business sell? Who are its customers? What makes it different? Which pages are required? Should visitors book, call, buy, register, or download something?

ChatGPT needs the same clarity.

A useful prompt is not simply a longer prompt. It is an instruction containing the right information. Length without direction can still produce a weak result.

Before asking ChatGPT to create anything, provide the business context, intended audience, desired outcome, important facts, and limitations it must respect. Tell it what must remain unchanged and what it is allowed to recommend.

Let AI Ask Questions First

One of the easiest ways to improve your results is to stop demanding an immediate final answer.

Instead, ask ChatGPT to interview you before it begins.

You could say:

“Before creating this homepage, ask me the questions you need to understand the business, customers, services, competitive advantage, tone, and primary call to action. Do not write the page until I answer.”

This changes the conversation. Instead of forcing AI to guess, you give it permission to discover the information it needs.

Your answers then become the foundation for a more relevant result.

The First Answer Is a Draft

Even a strong prompt may not produce the perfect result immediately. The first response should be treated as a working draft.

Read it carefully. Look for weak claims, missing information, repetition, generic wording, and ideas that do not match the business. Then give specific feedback.

Do not simply say, “I don’t like it.” Explain the problem.

For example:

“The headline is too general. Rewrite it to focus on the result customers want.”

“The section is too long. Reduce it without removing the main benefit.”

“The desktop layout works, but the cards overflow on mobile. Correct the mobile layout only.”

One instruction I use frequently is:

“Keep everything else unchanged. Fix only this.”

That instruction helps prevent AI from rewriting an entire section when only one element needs attention.

Better Prompts Produce Better Websites

This matters greatly when building websites with ChatGPT and WordPress.

A website is not a collection of random sections. Every page should have a purpose, and every section should move the visitor towards a useful next step.

If your prompt focuses only on appearance, ChatGPT may create something beautiful that does not help the business. If your prompt includes the customer journey, offer, evidence, page goal, and required action, the output becomes much more valuable.

The difference is direction.

You do not need to know every coding term. You need to understand what you are trying to achieve and communicate it clearly. When something goes wrong, describe what you can see, where it happens, and what should happen instead.

Become the Director

The most effective ChatGPT users do not behave like passengers. They direct the work.

They provide context, ask questions, examine the first output, request focused corrections, and test the result. They know that AI can work quickly, but speed still needs judgement.

Before calling ChatGPT basic, examine the conversation you started. Did you provide enough context? Did you define the result? Did you answer its questions? Did you review the first draft? Did you explain what needed improvement?

ChatGPT may be capable of much more than your first response suggests.

The better your direction becomes, the more useful the tool becomes. That is one of the central lessons behind The ChatBuild Method: professional results do not come from one magical prompt. They come from a clear goal, a thoughtful process, and a human being who knows how to guide the work.
